Automation is a necessity in the North American auto parts industry of which the automated installation of fasteners is an important aspect. We have designed systems that enable operators to handle self-feeding screwdrivers, systems that integrate robots coupled to self-feeding drivers, but the most challenging project we have undertaken has been the the automated fastening of the members of the radiator support shown below. Complicating the problem is the very large washer that came pre-assembled to the bolt. All the fasteners are blow-fed from vibratory feeders and driven to prescribed torques by servo-driven electric drivers. An operator loads the parts, the machine clamps them into position in accordance to datum set by the customer, 13 fasteners are driven, a quality mark applied and the part unloaded in 25 seconds.
